Dream Development & Energy Technology LLC (Dream DET) was founded in 2019 by Chris McTaggart – a native Detroiter and nationally respected expert in the energy efficient and sustainable buildings industry. The company has a sole focus of serving as an asset to the community by sharing our knowledge of high performance building and to empower the Metro Detroit region to embrace the economic and environmental benefits of sustainable buildings.
Growing up in Detroit in the 80s thru early 2000s, I was exposed to some extremes of the devolution of the mid-20th century dream of urban prosperity. The auto industry, previously the guarantor of middle class prosperity for an entire region, fell on difficult times both due to market competition as well as advancement of a globalized system of economic production and development. Beyond economic headwinds, Detroit city suffered mass population loss due to the expansion of the US highway system, making previous agricultural hinterlands surrounding the city prime for suburban development. This combined with a legacy of red-lining and neighborhood fracturing due to industrial and infrastructure development, Detroit – an ever resilient city founded in 1703 – seemed to have a bleak prospect for the future while I was growing up.
The reality is that despite the decline, the soul of the city never left; people stayed and stuck through the difficult times, and created a culture and spirit that isn’t found many other places. Artists, community organizers, entrepreneurs and regular working people have stuck through the worst of times, and paved the way for resurgence in national recognition and development of the past decade; Detroit would be nothing without its people.
To say Detroit has environmental justice issues is a massive understatement. From the exposure to noxious industrial fumes in far Southwest to the deprivation of potable water of thousands of residents who face water shutoffs, there are many major and significant issues relating to sustainability that deserve action and resolution.
